Recently while camping near Yellowstone, I came upon something odd on a small fence I was walking past. It was dusk and at first I couldn't make out what I was looking at. As I came closer it became clear they were newbie birds. One of them flew away immediately, but the other three continued to sit, huddled together looking at me with their big eyes. Their parent flew in, fed one of them and flew off before I realized what was happening. They looked to me like the model picture of new life sitting there on their fence, their eyes big in wonder as they surveyed their new surroundings.

One lesson from nature here is to stick together. After all, the birdie that flew away wasn't fed. My observation is that most people, who have lots of good things in their lives, have those good things through their connections with other people. And, just to clarify, by "having good things" I mean fullness, creativity, lightness, happiness, relationships and health and the like. Most people who have these things also give a lot to others.
Another lesson from nature is that idea of "beginners mind". Let's try looking at the world with big, wide eyes as though it was completely new to us. I think this will enable us to actually see what is around us instead of looking at things from a place of autopilot.
The next morning I exited the tent and looked immediately for the newbie birds. They were looking for food on the ground while their parent frequently flew in with food supplements. Because they were active this time I could see the beginnings of blue on their wings and I could see the parent clearly. It was a mountain blue bird family.

About Songbirds
After the last e-news about the juncos nesting in my garden a friend asked me why I have so many experiences with songbirds. On a really practical level, we compost our yard waste and food waste back into the soil in our garden, which creates healthy, rich soil. This results in fuller plant growth and also lots of delicious insects and worms - well delicious to birds, anyway.
Secondly, I invite songbirds into my garden and my life on a daily basis as part of my prayers.
If you missed the nesting junco e-news and would like me to send you a copy of it, please click here and type "juncos" in the subject box. |
| How Do I Live in This World?
Recently people have been asking the question "How do I live in this world?" This has been a theme with some of my friends and clients. It is a good question and one that each person has to answer for him or herself. Part of my private practice work is helping people to find their unique answer to this question.
The state of affairs has been very crazy now for a number of years. I wish I could say this is likely to change soon, but I doubt it. Energetically things are very chaotic and inconsistent. People experience this many different ways. Some people feel ungrounded and spacey. Others experience tremendous fear. Some people work harder and harder to try to control their environment.
No matter how you slice it, this crazy chaotic thing is the energetic ocean we are all swimming in. I think a good plan is to make the best of the situation we find ourselves in. Here are a few suggestions from my toolbox:
- Find a way to work with gratitude every day. Here is what I do. Each night before going to sleep I think of 3 good things that happened that day. It has always been true that even on a "bad day" I can easily come up with 3 good things. This helps to keep me focused on the positive things in my life. As a result I am less plagued by enormous world problems I feel powerless to solve or even influence the outcome of.
- Find a creative way to encourage the change you would like to see in the world. One way I am looking at doing this is through music. I am very aware of the change and heightened awareness that music can evoke. I work regularly on musical interpretations of songs that I think have that potential. Additionally, music can be tremendously healing and comforting. I find this is true of listening to music, but even more so of playing it myself. I have also started Puerta Abierta Foundation, a non-profit that opens a door to hope and a better life for the poor in Central America. It also opens a door of meaningful giving for its donors. If you would like more information about Puerta Abierta, please click here and type PAF in the comments box.

Strum Your Bliss
I have created the Strum Your Bliss guitar classes to provide a supportive setting in which adults can learn to play music. Guitar is a unique instrument because guitars are highly portable and one does not have to read music to play. SYB is designed to accommodate adults with responsibilities and busy lives. If you are interested in learning to play, please click here to join us.
Strum Your Bliss Seattle has been close to a "go" lots of times, but has always not quite "gone". This has been hard to get a read on, basically. If you are interested in SYB Seattle, please let me know right away. We could start the first week of October, on Monday evenings in Greenwood.
