Finding Gentleness
Today I paused
a moment to watch the evergreens gently rustling in the
breeze. They moved both rhythmically and randomly creating a
simple and beautiful dance. The leaves on the ground moved
ever so slightly in response to the same breeze. The lesson
from nature is that there is gentleness
everywhere.
Gentleness is easy to miss. When it is storming and the
tree branches are thrashing wildly, we notice them immediately
because of their big and dramatic movements.
It is easy to be overwhelmed with the drama, harshness
and violence we are exposed to regularly. Actually, I think
there is even more gentleness in the world than drama,
harshness and violence. It is just easy to miss because it is
quiet. Because of this, it is important for us to look for
gentleness, because if we look, we will find it. Once we find
it, it will be that much easier to live
it.

Quotable Quote
"The most important thing for the West to learn is that
there is no one truth. There are many truths. You have a
truth. I have a truth. Both could be true. Take a tree. A
botanist sees a particular species. The carpenter sees wood
for furniture. A religious person sees a sacred tree. A poet
is inspired to write a poem and a painter sees a painting. One
tree, many views. Many truths - all equally true."
Satish Kumar as quoted in Ode Magazine, October
